Asian Satellite Operators: The Emergence of a New Dynamic in the RegionAs Asia emerges from the pandemic, demand and supply dynamics have changed dramatically. In the space industry, while some markets have experienced large negative impacts, others have generated massive investments and launched systems that have entered and will disrupt the marketplace. Case in point are LEO systems in general and SpaceX' Starlink in particular. What is the outlook for Asian operators in the short-, mid- and long-term? How do regional and national operators address the new competitive landscape? What is or is there a "LEO strategy" in the offing?

Satellite Constellations: The Early MoversConstellations covering all corners of the earth in bandwidth. We’ve seen this game before, and 20 years ago, it did not end well. Will it be different this time? In part 1 of a special 3-part afternoon session, we will hear from some of the early movers to this new generation of high throughout constellations, getting insights into the trials, tribulations, and technological wizardry that’s been going on in LEO and MEO over the past few years. With a panel of established players operating satellites in various orbits, we will tackle questions related to multi-orbit solutions, new applications being enabled by constellations, go-to-market strategy for the players that already have boots on the ground, and more, to help answer the question: will history repeat itself, or are constellations the key to the satcom industry getting a bigger piece of the telecoms pie? And stay tuned, because this is just the first session!

Satellite Constellations: The Fast FollowersBig companies led by big names, specifically Elon Musk of SpaceX/Starlink, Jeff Bezoz of Amazon/Kuiper and OneWeb originally spearheaded by Greg Wyler as well as SES' mPower and Telesat's Lightspeed have dominated the constellations scene. However, fast on their heels are NewSpace companies that are looking to offer satcom services and add their own value proposition to the marketplace, which will further change the competitive dynamics of the industry.
- How do they view and react to the competitive landscape being led by Musk, Bezoz, Wyler and other big companies?
- What is their market differentiator?
- What are the major challenges they are facing? Technological, Financial, customer behavior among others?
- How do they close the business case?
- What is their go-to-market strategy specifically in the Asia Pacific?

Satellite Manufacturing: How Can Satellite Manufacturers Survive and Thrive in Changing Market? As the market keeps changing and challenging new inspirations, the satellite manufacturing business is trying to echo to those. The traditional GEO and LEO satellite manufacturing business model no longer works to even survive. Flexible and software-defined satellites emerged and quickly dominated the GEO market. Price pressure is the strongest ever, and emergence of very small (VS-) GEO products is creating a new niche. Cubesat and microsat markets are increasing and new players have emerged. Traditional satellite manufacturers are rushing to create presence there, and trying to connect this strategy with their own manufacturing portfolio. Shift from "Satellite-as-a-Product" to "Satellite-as-a-Service” is also occurring. How are the traditional satellite manufacturers looking at the market environment changes, and how are they trying to adapt those for their business? Do they have clear strategies to not only survive there, but also grow? This session will try to highlight the state of the market, and discuss issues and opportunities for satellite manufacturers.

The Changing Face of Satellite ManufacturingWhen we think about satellite manufacturing business, traditional ways may no longer the only way. There are new business approaches emerging at the industry. There are ways of addressing satellite manufacturing business, advancing business modeling, tarting specific niche market segments, and combining various different values chains….. At the crowded market, these attempts must make a sense to consider. In this panel, we will ask companies with such new ways of doing business to introduce their market recognitions, plans, strategies and rationales, which will be used as cases for studies and discussions. It is also interesting to compare these cases with traditional suppliers’ market recognitions and business cases that are discussed at the previous panel.

Launch Services: Mega-constellations and the Launch Market - How Much Room is Left?China, Japan, Europe, India and the United States are developing new heavy-lift rockets. For years, the market has questioned whether all of them could survive given the likely demand. With the arrival of the mega constellations, the dialogue has changed. Starlink and Kuiper alone have enough demand to nourish Falcon 9, Blue Origin, ULA and Arianespace for years. OneWeb will be looking for replacement launchers, now that Russia's Soyuz is not available. What happens if the European Commission, or Telesat, or China, or some other mega constellation arrives? So the market now for heavy-lift launchers is looking much, much better. How do these operators view the market given these trends? Are they prepared to increase production, or do they need to wait and see other large constellations emerge? Everything changes now that we have three mega constellations confirmed as being real – Starlink, OneWeb and Kuiper.

Hardware is out! The “Software-ification” of GroundThe virtualization of hardware functions onto software became a commercial reality in the IT industry in the early 1990s. Thirty years later, and more than 15 years after Amazon created the first cloud service, virtualization has come at long last to satellite communications. Satellite ground segment has long been dominated by hardware solutions: boxloads of signal processors, modems, channelizers and combiners. Today, RF signals can be translated into and out of IP close to the antenna, and all these functions can be supported in software running on commodity services on-premise or in the cloud. What are the implications for cost, efficiency, redundancy and quality of service?

Direct to Handset: The Dream or The Reality?People are indeed skeptical about whether the direct-to-unmodified-handset dream is about to become a reality for broadband access. But several companies -- AST SpaceMobile, Omnispace, Lynk -- are developing networks designed to do just that. Established mobile satellite services providers like Iridium, Inmarsat, Globalstar and Thuraya also face new competition from satellite IoT startups. Will the market let a hundred flowers bloom, or is there a consolidation play now that access to capital is more of a challenge? The goal of the panel is to provide a snapshot of a dynamic sector.

Ground Station as a Service (GSaaS): What's the Road Ahead?GSaas providers occupy a new niche in satellite communications. They run software platforms that vastly simplify management of satcom services and provide access to third-party antennas in locations around the world. For teleport operators, they represent a market channel that allows monetization of underused assets. For customers, they provide a single point of contact for global satcom with a user-friendly interface for ordering and managing service and monitoring quality of service against SLAs. But as always, achieving simplification involves managing (and hiding) enormous complexity – made even more so by the emergence of multi-orbit services. How will GSaaS companies – and their partners in the teleport industry – manage the big transitions ahead?
