LEO VS GEO SATELLITE ARCHITECTURES IMPLICATIONS FOR MILITARY COMMUNICATIONS
As space becomes more militarily important, innovative new satellite form factors and in-space capabilities enable new satellite communication architectures in both LEO and GEO. Cubesat and small satellites weighing hundreds, rather than thousands, of kilograms are changing the satellite remote sensing and telecommunications landscape by providing lower cost satellite solutions achieving orbit at a faster pace than traditional, large, exquisite GEO systems. Systems like Starlink, Kuiper, OneWeb, and Telesat Lightspeed intend to launch tens of thousands of satellites to LEO within the next 10 years. This panel will discuss comparative advantages and disadvantages of LEO smallsat constellation systems, conventional GEO systems, and related satellite servicing systems.
