PHILIPPINES FOCUS THE PHILIPPINES “OFFICIALLY” JOINS THE SPACE RACE
In August 2019, the Philippine Space Agency was established signalling the “official” entrance of the country as a space-faring nation with the primary goal of serving the country’s strategic roadmap for space development. The Philippines is no stranger to space as it has developed three small-scale satellites namely Diwata-1, Diwata-2, and Maya-1 and back in the late 1990’s established Mabuhay Satellite Corporation, which was later purchased by ABS. The Philippines joins a wave of Southeast Asia nations that have established space agencies including Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam while others like Myanmar are currently mulling over the initiative. The panel will discuss:
Why is a space agency important and what are the benefits in entering the space race?
What roles do the government and the private sector have in developing the national space ecosystem?
What is the Philippines’ fit in the overall global value chain?
What does establishing a space agency mean for other smaller nations as they enter and participate in the Space Economy?
