Government Initiatives to Bridge the Digital Divide
Case Study of Indonesia and Malaysia

Bridging the digital divide has always been a primary task for governments in many countries. Here in Asia, two countries have been the most successful ones to create and implement the Universal Service Obligation (USO) projects: Indonesia and Malaysia.

As the biggest users of satellite capacity, governments of both countries are becoming the “rising stars” in the market, bringing significant impact to the dynamics in the satellite industry in Asia.

This session will look into the success stories of government projects in Indonesia and Malaysia, and explore opportunities to expand such experience into other countries in the region. Local service providers, a satellite operator, and an equipment manufacturer will share their know-how and discuss their expected roles in various government projects.

Is the Philippines the Next Big Digital Divide Market?

Southeast Asia and Oceania have become the hotbed of digital inclusion projects, specifically with initiatives coming from NBN in Australia, BAKTI in Indonesia and MCMC in Malaysia.

In March 2021, Executive Order #127 was signed into law in the Philippines, which expands the provision of Internet services through inclusive access to satellite services, allowing enfranchised telecommunications entities, value service providers (VAS) and ISPs to be allowed access to all satellite systems, whether fixed or mobile, international or domestic, as well as to build and operate broadband facilities. Is this law the market signal that will usher in dynamic and robust growth for satellite connectivity services in the region?
