THE INDUSTRY IMPACT OF FLEXIBLE SATELLITES

POWERED BY

Satellite manufacturers have begun to introduce “flexible” satellites – such as SES-17, Inmarsat G7, 8 and 9, and more recently, Optus 11 – which are designed to be reconfigurable in orbit to maximize bandwidth and meet varying and evolving customer needs. This evolution marks a dramatic change in satellite design and manufacturing, but also has implications for ground network systems and ongoing operations. Specifically, to support flexible satellites, ground systems will be called upon to not just interact with the satellite resource management system, but to quickly retune and acquire new channels across gateway stations and remote terminals. During this conversation, representatives from satellite manufacturers Airbus and Thales will join Hughes and Argosat to discuss the future of flexible satellites, including capabilities on the horizon and implications for ground system development
